Luca Lately (almost 2)

When do people stop telling their child's age in months? I always felt like after your child turned one was appropriate. Until I had Luca and moms at the park would ask how old he was and when I responded with "he's one" their confused stares that were practically begging me to give them more information said otherwise. So I would quickly add, "he's 16.5 months" in order to end the awkwardness.

So maybe it's more socially acceptable after 18 months? That's when I stopped keeping track at least. Because then I started to look more like a mom who doesn't know her sons age when asked because I would say, "what day is today? well let's see- August, September, October..." Because I can barely remember to brush my hair let alone remember what day of the month it is or better yet whether or not my child is 16, 16.5, or 17 months old. He's one, one and a half, almost 2, and then 2.

Anyway, all that to say here is what Luca has been up to lately. He is currently 2 months and 8 days away from turning 2 (I may or may not have used my fingers to figure that one out).

- he is a very picky eater. He doesn't like to try new things, and he also doesn't like to eat the same things over and over again. Which poses quite the dilemma. He really enjoys the spinach, raspberry and greek yogurt Plum pouches. He would eat those all day every day if we let him. He also loves his  Annie's bunnies, Annie's fruit snacks, oatmeal, and yogurt. These foods seem to be ones he never gets sick of, no matter how often he eats them. Some foods that he likes but only every so often are strawberries, cottage cheese, peanut butter sandwich on cinnamon bread, toast, and Annie's mac and cheese.
- we have never given him juice- the only thing he ever drinks is water and occasionally (but rarely) milk. He likes milk, but doesn't like to drink it from a cup.
- we have noticed that when we give Luca sweets he gets really, really grumpy after the sugar high has worn off. Needless to say we try not to give him sweets very often so we can avoid the meltdowns that are inevitable a few hours later (and of course the unhealthy sugar).

- in the past few weeks Luca has decided he hates napping in his crib. We know he is tired and needs to nap, and he will, just not in his crib. He will nap in your arms or in the car, but if you move him to his crib or try laying him down for a nap- it's game over. He sleeps wonderfully at night though- from 7/730 pm to 730/8 am. He tends to sleep in on the weekends which we very much appreciate (even though his bedtime is the same).

- he has recently become obsessed with lawn mowers, weed whackers, and leaf/grass blowers. He LOVES when the landscapers come to take care of our neighborhood. He will stand in the window and watch for hours.
- Luca has a plastic tee ball stand that he received for Christmas this year. A few weeks ago he took the pole that the ball sits on off of the stand and started going around the house making a loud "uhhhhhhh" noise. He had a very serious look on his face too and it took me a minute to realize what he was doing. He was doing his own "leaf blowing" around the house. He loves to have you mow while he blows the grass, and then he will rotate roles. I couldn't believe how creative that was- he thought to do that all on his own. He still does it too- all day long. But now almost everything that sort of resembles a pole/stick is a leaf blower.
- while he is busy mowing or leaf blowing, he will do this certain bounce/half dance/walk. It is the cutest thing- he bobs up and down and slightly side to side while he works. He has a hop in his step as he works tirelessly to get all the yard work done.

-another activity he loves to do is "go to work". He will sit on his bike or push his mower/blower- he will wave goodbye, smile, say "love you!", sometimes give a kiss and then ride off. After his loop around the house he will come back in the room beaming and expects to hear "how was work? did you have a good day?" and then he laughs and laughs.

- Luca has learned how to schmooze. He knows that his smile with the nose scrunch and head tilt just melts us. It may or may not work most of the time.
- he has began to really understand humor. He will do something intentionally to make us or himself laugh, and truly understand what's going on.
- he doesn't say many words clearly. I keep trying not to worry or stress about it but it's hard not to. He says no and yes clearly- with beginning and ending sounds. Lee and I have noticed that he is saying more and he's also saying new sounds which is good, but they aren't always real, complete words.

- we can't bring ourselves to cut his hair. I can acknowledge that from certain angles it appears as though he has a mullet. But those curls! I just can't do it. And believe it or not, Lee is more adamant about not cutting his hair than I am.

- Luca is the high maintenance child in his class at church. He likes to be held and is a bit needy as he doesn't like going and being away from us. I was called out of church once because he wouldn't calm down after an hour or so of non stop crying. His teachers always reassure us that he (usually) calms down and plays well and so I cling to that after they pry him from my arms while he's screaming. And I also pray over him and the workers as I am walking away, in an attempt to keep myself from running back to get him saying "We'll just watch church from home, thanks!"

- Luca loves to play hide and seek. He loves to be chased, he laughs and squeals and if I could just bottle that noise up to listen to on repeat for the rest of my life I would be one happy momma. Sometimes when he is being chased he will run into your arms and will curl his arms and legs around you as he laughs and is giddy with anticipation.
- Luca also likes to play the "pretend you're sleeping!" game. I started typing out what the game is exactly but it made my siblings and I seem a little crazy. So I will just simply state he likes to play that game, and I will know what it means when I look back on this post in the future.

- Luca still loves books. He will randomly grab them during the day and we always read multiple books before bed each night.
- I love our nighttime routine. We usually put him to bed together, which I love. Here's what our night usually looks like: Luca and I run upstairs ahead of lee and hide, which Luca finds hilarious. Lee will find us or we jump out to "scare" him, we get Luca in a new diaper and in his sleep sack, then we read a bible story and a few other books. We say Luca's prayers, rock him for a few minutes, then lay him down in his crib whispering "I love you" as he waves and whispers "love you" back. It is hands down the best part of my day, every day. I love our routine, I love the snuggles, I love the bond the three of us share, I love teaching our boy about Jesus, I love all of it- every single part.

Easter cuteness!

Luca got a new bike and helmet for Easter from Nana and Pops. He wore that helmet around the house for days.

He got first first scraped knee this month. :( Poor guy. We learned after this injury how dramatic our boy is. He still points to his knee and says "boo" even though it is completely healed and has been for weeks. He also limped and walked by dragging his leg behind him while the cut was fresh. I have no idea where he gets his tendency towards the dramatics from...

Sometimes Lee and Luca FaceTime me while I am at work. Which, of course, is the best surprise.

Eating with utensils like a big boy!

A king on his throne (that he demanded I stack high before he sat down).

Kid bowling with Dad!

One of Luca's jokes is to "forget" to open the straw and pretend to drink. He thinks it's hilarious and does it daily.

I see so much of my brother (left) in Luca. So H texted the picture above. And I said something about  how my son looks nothing like me and I am the one who carried him around inside of me for 40 weeks so H sent the picture below to make me feel a bit better.

Doing some leaf blowing.

The above face is the one he makes while he makes the "uhhhh" leaf blower noise.

Sometimes Luca thinks it's funny to "blow" at mom.

Lee took Luca to a new museum this day, this was Luca's favorite part of the trip

It's hard work but somebody's gotta do it.

Just doing some mowing and blowing (the yellow wiffle ball bat is the honorary leaf blower at Nana and Pops house).

I can't seem to use the bathroom in peace these days. Although, I wouldn't trade these interruptions for anything.

Sometimes Luca likes to hold my hand while we watch TV. And it's in these sweet moments that my heart does this weird thing where it feels like it might explode with love for this boy.

Another thing Luca likes to do is run. He will literally just run circles around the house, outside, anywhere. Not in a "I'm full of energy so this is how I will get it out" way. It's more of a "I like doing this fun activity and I would like for you to join me" way.

Auntie H always sends Luca a sticker and a card in the mail. Luca gets very excited to put the sticker on. Then take it off and put it back on. And repeat until the sticker is no longer sticky.

A house is being built next door to my parent's and Luca is beside himself with excitement. There have been diggers, tools, saws going and DIRT!

Luca loves to smell flowers. In real life, in books- he is always pointing them out and then he makes the face below while sniffing them.

This face and the kisses he gives are the best thing ever.

Love my family, love my life.
I am blessed beyond measure.

story time.

I am very behind in blogging, and while I do have every intention in getting caught up some day (hopefully soon), I wanted to take the time to document the time I spent with Lee and Luca today. I wanted to write it all down while it was fresh in my mind so that I didn't forget all the small details of the day. While I like to think I will always remember and cherish days like today, I am afraid that's not always the case. So having it documented to look back on is so helpful, and why I started this blog in the first place.

Recently I have been working a lot more outside of the home. For most of Luca's life thus far I have been able to work from home because my hours/work load were super flexible. However, for the past 2 months I have been going into the office and working all day. One of the hardest things about working outside of the home is feeling like I am missing out on Luca's days. Not knowing what stories he likes to read over and over again, or what toy is his current favorite, etc. I know that sounds silly since I see him every night but it's not the same. He is growing and changing so quickly that it feels like I am missing out on so much when I am not with him. I long to know all of these things and it breaks my heart to walk out the door each morning.

Today, however, I had the day off. The entire day. Which meant that my only job was to focus on my sweet boy. I didn't have any work to get done while he was napping, or things to accomplish with him while he was awake. And it was SO nice. I desperately needed a day like today. It wasn't anything fancy or out of the ordinary. But I think that's what made it so perfect.

To start the day, Lee and I took Luca to his first story hour. I feel like I should have taken him to one sooner, but with his morning nap and my work schedule it made it challenging to get out the door in time for one. Anyway, today we went to one at a library in uptown Charlotte. The library is pretty cool and almost looks more like an interactive museum than a library- full of things to entertain him for hours.

Having never been to this library or a story hour (with Luca) before, I was curious to see how Luca would do. I know he much he loves to read books at home, but being in a new environment surrounded by other kids was a different story (see what I did there? It wasn't even intentional).

The story hour was great- full of poems, hand claps, songs, stories, dancing, and bubbles. Luca, however, lost interest in the first story and was really more interested in exploring this cool new place. He did better after the first story because there was music and singing and he LOVES to dance. The last story that was read was about cars and even had a motorcycle in it, which was right up his alley. So he listened to that story in it's entirety and loved it.

At the end of story hour the person in charge blew lots of bubbles. When Luca saw the bubbles- I tell you, I have never seen such sheer joy in all my life. He smiled the biggest, most excited smile with both arms up in the air in complete awe of the bubbles. And then he got on his hands and knees so he could crawl around and try to pop the bubbles on the ground. He had the best time.

After the story hour was over (and all the bubbles had been popped), we explored the different areas in the library where Luca could play and he absolutely loved it all. And we loved watching him love it all. He was friendly with all the other kids (he loves to wave to everyone and anyone), shared well, and was all around just so happy.

Up until now, when we have gone places with Luca and there are other kids around, he tended to stay near us and shy away from interacting with other kids that are in large groups. But today he didn't do that. He was completely comfortable in going and exploring, trying to grab bubbles, play and dance- all without knowing if we were right beside him or not. I think it was seeing that new independence in him that made today such a great day for me. I feel like he has grown into a little boy in the past few weeks, and while I am sad to see him leave the baby stage, I am also incredibly proud of him. My heart beams to see him try new things and step out of his comfort zone in order to do so. Seeing him today- he seemed so grown up and I am so grateful that I was able to witness it first hand. The feelings of extreme pride and joy and love that I felt today as I watched my boy become more independent are what I don't want to forget. I wish I could take days like today and bottle them up and carry them around in my pocket.

Not only did I love seeing the growth Luca has made, but there is seriously nothing greater than seeing your child see/experience something new for the first time. The look of complete awe and fascination is priceless. Seeing things through his eyes turns something ordinary into something magical. Being able to see life through his eyes is such a gift, one I am incredibly grateful for.

The rest of our day consisted of naps, play time at home, play time at the park, hide and seek with Nana, and bedtime stories. While those sound like such ordinary activities, they felt extraordinary today.

I am so grateful for my boy, and so grateful for all that he has brought into our lives.

Father's Day

For Lee's first official Father's Day, we celebrated by doing things he loves to do. Which means we were outdoors most of the weekend. Lee loves spending time in nature. Which works out since SO DO I.

Sarah was in town for the weekend, so she joined in on the fun and celebrated with us. On Saturday there was a beer tasting festival at the White Water Rafting Center in Charlotte, so we went to that. Lee and Sarah enjoyed their beer samples and I enjoyed holding Luca (I am not a beer drinker). Saturday night we got take out and enjoyed the AC, as it was incredibly hot out at the beer tasting and Luca (and the rest of us) needed to cool off. All night. Also, I needed to ice and elevate my foot on account of the fire ant attack I endured on our hike up to the beer tasting. (I am not sure why but if there is a fire ant hill anywhere near where I am standing outside, they smell my fear and find my feet. And then attack. I LOVE NATURE.)

On Sunday, Luca and I made Lee breakfast in bed. Which worked out since Luca was getting anxious to try pancakes. The pancakes were a hit- with both Luca and Lee. And Sarah too if I'm being honest. After a late breakfast we had planned to go for a walk on Lee's favorite hiking trail. We got about 20 minutes into the walk when my dad called. He had a layover flight in Charlotte that ended up getting cancelled. We were so excited because it meant that we got to see him on Father's Day.  It was such an unexpected surprise and we were so thankful for the time with him.

We had a pretty low key afternoon, we just hung out and enjoyed being together. All in all, it was a great weekend.

I am beyond thankful that Lee is my partner in crime and that I get to do life with him. I feel so blessed that we get to raise Luca together, that he is not just my husband but the father to our precious boy. He is an amazing father too- I love watching him with Luca. It fills my heart with such joy to see those two together.

We love you Lee! We can't wait to celebrate Father's Day with you for many, many years to come. We are so blessed you are ours!

Sweet father son moment at the White Water Rafting Center.

It was a lot of fun, but it was also really hot.

Back in some AC and with his favorite toy- a water bottle.

Since Luca is older, it is rare that he falls asleep on your chest. He was super tired and fell asleep on his auntie- which was a huge bonus for her. Extra snuggles are the best.

He loved the pancakes. Who doesn't?

Surprise!

Airplane!

This may be my favorite picture of all time. Look at the genuine joy oozing out of them!

Best shot we got of the three of us.

Love these two men- both are such outstanding fathers. I am blessed beyond measure!

Our weekend ended with some family snuggles on the couch. Which may be my favorite thing to do these days.

Mother's Day (part 2)

On Mother's Day we took a day trip to check out a city that some friends told us about. It was a lot of fun exploring a new place. There are a lot of different places we want to check out, but most of them are about 3-4 hours away. Since we couldn't make it a weekend trip, we opted for exploring the place that was 1.5 hours away instead. It was absolutely perfect, the weather was beautiful and the city was beautiful. But most of all- I just loved being together, making memories.

Trying to take a picture with Luca isn't as easy these days.

Mother's Day

I am a mother. I celebrated Mother's Day and I was celebrated on Mother's Day. That felt so surreal! There are moments in our day to day life that remind me I am a mother (like the first time I licked my finger and wiped something off of Luca's face), but it still felt strange being celebrated for it. Like- how is this even my life?

Becoming a mother has been the greatest gift I could ever receive. Growing up I always dreamt of becoming one. I was your typical girly girl, playing house, barbies, doll house- anything related to dressing up dolls or myself and having "kids". I always imagined how wonderful it would be becoming a mother. But the real thing has far surpassed all I could have ever imagined.

Luca is the greatest blessing. I never knew what my life was missing until he arrived. People always say, "can you even remember life without him?" but I think the more appropriate question is "isn't life so much richer with him in it?" Because the truth is, nothing else has and nothing else will ever bring me such endless joy. Every single day. When I see my sweet boy's face, nothing else matters. When I get him from his crib every morning, when I turn the corner and see him playing, when I am feeding him (and he is gagging), when he is in his stroller, when he is asleep in his crib- every single time I see him I am overcome with a joy and a love that I couldn't have ever imagined.

So while it felt completely surreal to be celebrated on Mother's Day, it was also an absolute honor. In fact, it is the greatest honor. One I am so incredibly grateful that I am blessed with.

Becoming a mother has also given me a deeper appreciation for my own mother. I see her in a new light and I recognize all the sacrifices that she made for me over the years. But mostly, I feel more connected to her knowing that how I feel about Luca, is how she feels about me. Being Luca's mother is such a blessing, and so is having my mom as my mother. I have learned what I know about unconditional love because of her. And if I can be half the mother she is to me, I know Luca will be in good hands.

The greatest lesson of all though, the one that overwhelms me every time I think about it is something that becoming a mother has shown me. Knowing how much I love Luca, the joy he brings me, and how blessed I feel to call him my son- makes me have a greater understanding of our Heavenly Father's love for us. And what blows my mind is that the love I feel for Luca is only a portion of His love for me. Words cannot express how grateful I am for that love.

 Love at first sight.
